It's All About Him

On Veterans Day in 2015, I called my step-dad to thank him for his service.  This man stepped into my life when I was four and became my “Dad”.  He just loved.  He gave.  He wasn’t saved at first but finally after much prayer and many visits accepted Christ.  On that November day, I talked to him and thanked him for his service and asked when we could come visit the next week.  He had recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and was having a hard time making it to all his doctor appointments.  So, he told me to call him on Monday and he’d let me know.
On Sunday, I tried to call him just to see what he was doing.  He didn’t answer.  Monday, the same thing.  On Tuesday, my children and I bundled up and made the hour drive down to his house only to find that he wasn’t there, he was with Jesus.  That was November 17.  A day I will never forget.
One thing that impressed me greatly was all the people who came to my Dad’s funeral.  Hundreds.  If you ever met Mel Proffit, you’d never forget him.  He was just one of those people.  The verse kept coming to mind about a “good name.”  He sure had one.

Shortly after he passed, I looked up that verse only to find a gold mine in that whole chapter.  It healed my heart and I hope if you are hurting, that it can help heal yours.
Ecc. 7:1 ~ A good name is better than precious ointment: and the day of death than the day of birth.  If you’ve lived your life to honor God, this will be true.  What an encouragement that is!  The day my Dad died was better than the day he was born.  Of course it was!  He got to meet Jesus!  Ecc. 7:8 ~ Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof….
But this next set of verses!  WOW!!!  Verse 13 and 14 ~ Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight which he hath made crooked?  In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him. This verse was a balm to my soul.  Friends, we all have days of adversity, we all have days of prosperity.  And when you have those days of prosperity BE JOYFUL!  EAT IT UP!  Enjoy every minute.  But when you have a day of adversity, STOP AND CONSIDER.  God, sets one against the other to the end, that YOU WOULD FIND NOTHING AFTER GOD.  It’s all about HIM.  Our joy, our sorry, our losses, our sickness, our grief.  They are all set in place by a loving God who wants to draw us to HIM!  I’ve never felt so close to God as in those moments of deepest despair. I think back to when my Mom passed away in 2005, I remember sitting on my couch in the morning before our babies woke up and having such a sweet time with the Lord.  KNOWING my Mom was with him, and now my Dad makes me so filled with joy.
So today, ladies, whether you are having a day filled with joy or sorrow, let HIM draw you to HIMSELF!
