Be Chocolate! / Mrs Kayte McCoy

Any tofu lovers out there?    We're not tofu eaters at our house. I've tried tofu a few times, and if it's part of a good recipe, I actually don't mind it all. But my husband is completely uninterested.    So if you do love tofu, I have nothing against tofu as a food. But I don't want to be tofu.    You see, tofu can be scrumptious or disgusting, depending on the other ingredients in the dish. Tofu takes on the flavor of whatever is mixed with it.    I started using tofu to describe people when my husband and I were preparing for a youth conference trip. We were talking about which teenagers should be in hotel rooms together. When I said, "That girl is tofu," what I meant was that girl is easily influenced by the people in her company. Put her with other kids who are behaving and she will behave, but put her with kids who are not behaving and she will do as they do.   I don't mean it to be derogatory. Most teenagers are tofu. I was tofu. Sometimes, I still am tofu. But when you have a teenager around who is not tofu... whom you trust to do right when the people they are with are not, it's really refreshing.    Lately, I've been thinking of my spirit, or attitude. Is my spirit tofu? Does it take on the flavor of whatever is thrown into it?    Do you ever notice that when the weather is warm and sunny, generally everyone you meet all day is in a great mood? I think that is especially true in a climate such as where I live, where the bleakness and monotony of gray frigid days wears on us and we begin to crave Spring like an Atkins dieter fantasizing about a flaky, buttery dinner roll. Call it a vitamin D deficiency, but it almost seems like people wake up in the morning, check on the weather report and decide what kind of mood they will be in based on what the weather man predicts.    We're acting like tofu: mix sunny weather into our day, and we will be sunny and cheerful. Mix in rain and clouds and we will mimic the weather with our spirit.    More than being a mirror of the weather report, I don't want to be tofu when it comes to the circumstances and events of our lives. Life has tough stuff in it. It rains on the just and the unjust alike, the book of Job tells us. And yet that same Bible tells us to "Rejoice evermore!" The two can sometimes contradict one another in our minds and certainly in our actions. It's because we're being like tofu. We're taking on the flavor of the other ingredients of our life.    I don't want to be tofu. I want to be chocolate.    One of the better tofu dishes I've tried was tofu pudding. Do you know what it tasted like? Chocolate pudding. I didn't taste tofu at all. The only ingredient I could distinguish was chocolate. Beautiful, delicious chocolate. It overwhelmed every other contributor in the pudding.    I want to be like chocolate. I want to decide the flavor of my day. I want to decide what kind of disposition I will have. I do not want the news to dictate that today will be a bad day because the world is full of bad things. I do not want the actions of others to influence my spirit.    It seems that women in particular are more susceptible to allowing outside influences to determine their spirit. I dislike over generalizing the genders; surely men and women are different and some obvious trends do exist, but I understand that individuality within the sexes vary. Moody, sensitive men do exist, (is there anything on Earth less attractive than a moody man?) and rumor has it that a good female driver does exist, though it is, admittedly, not me. There are a few marred mailboxes to testify to that. I wish I were joking!☺ The fact, however, that most scented candles are bought by women, and at our house, it's always the females reaching to turn on the happy music, tells me that women are more inclined to rely on outside stimuli to affect them in a positive way.    It's ironic, isn't it? As women, we set the tone and atmosphere of our homes, and yet we are the most dependent and susceptible to our own environment to shape our own personal temperament.
A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.

Proverbs 27:15

I used to find humor in the verses about a contentious or brawling woman. Now a days, it's a little too close to home for laughing!

He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down,
and without walls.

Proverbs 25:28  I want to be chocolate. I want to choose to let the Bible and the blessings and the joy dominate my frame of mind. Not only that, but maybe I could flavor the world around me with a little more chocolate too? Most people are tofu: letting the circumstances around them govern their mood. One traffic jam can ruin their whole day. But amazingly, one friendly clerk at the post office can brighten a day. Doesn't it seem to be the responsibility of a Christian to be the chocolate that flavors its surroundings, and not the tofu that soaks in whatever is around?
Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
Matthew 5:13
When we act like chocolate instead of tofu, we can actually obey I Thessalonians 5:16 and "Rejoice evermore."  How is it that some people can sing songs of praise by the lifeless body of their loved one? They decided to be like chocolate. How in the world can a cancer patient have a smile on their face? They decided to be like chocolate. How can one mother with a house full of rambunctious kiddies be cheerful, while another is barely surviving? How can some people, with the same cares and trials that we all face, possess joy in a dark world? They decided to be like chocolate.  They carry their own joy with them, and share it with others.  Do you flavor your own life, or let others do it for you?
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
I John 4:4

It's All About Him

On Veterans Day in 2015, I called my step-dad to thank him for his service.  This man stepped into my life when I was four and became my “Dad”.  He just loved.  He gave.  He wasn’t saved at first but finally after much prayer and many visits accepted Christ.  On that November day, I talked to him and thanked him for his service and asked when we could come visit the next week.  He had recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and was having a hard time making it to all his doctor appointments.  So, he told me to call him on Monday and he’d let me know.
On Sunday, I tried to call him just to see what he was doing.  He didn’t answer.  Monday, the same thing.  On Tuesday, my children and I bundled up and made the hour drive down to his house only to find that he wasn’t there, he was with Jesus.  That was November 17.  A day I will never forget.
One thing that impressed me greatly was all the people who came to my Dad’s funeral.  Hundreds.  If you ever met Mel Proffit, you’d never forget him.  He was just one of those people.  The verse kept coming to mind about a “good name.”  He sure had one.
!1
Shortly after he passed, I looked up that verse only to find a gold mine in that whole chapter.  It healed my heart and I hope if you are hurting, that it can help heal yours.
Ecc. 7:1 ~ A good name is better than precious ointment: and the day of death than the day of birth.  If you’ve lived your life to honor God, this will be true.  What an encouragement that is!  The day my Dad died was better than the day he was born.  Of course it was!  He got to meet Jesus!  Ecc. 7:8 ~ Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof….
But this next set of verses!  WOW!!!  Verse 13 and 14 ~ Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight which he hath made crooked?  In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him. This verse was a balm to my soul.  Friends, we all have days of adversity, we all have days of prosperity.  And when you have those days of prosperity BE JOYFUL!  EAT IT UP!  Enjoy every minute.  But when you have a day of adversity, STOP AND CONSIDER.  God, sets one against the other to the end, that YOU WOULD FIND NOTHING AFTER GOD.  It’s all about HIM.  Our joy, our sorry, our losses, our sickness, our grief.  They are all set in place by a loving God who wants to draw us to HIM!  I’ve never felt so close to God as in those moments of deepest despair. I think back to when my Mom passed away in 2005, I remember sitting on my couch in the morning before our babies woke up and having such a sweet time with the Lord.  KNOWING my Mom was with him, and now my Dad makes me so filled with joy.
So today, ladies, whether you are having a day filled with joy or sorrow, let HIM draw you to HIMSELF!

My Heavenly Husband / Mrs Kenna Senn

                                                        MY HEAVENLY HUSBAND

Hello everyone, my name is Kenna Senn, and I am humbled to be here writing to you ladies. I only know a couple of you on here and hope what I'm going to talk about can be a blessing to even one person as it has been to me. My topic is going to come from Hosea and a wonderful story of God’s love.  But it isn't about how God made Hosea marry an harlot and shows us through Hosea’s sorrow that he redeems his bride back to himself after she chases other men and  ruins her life. Nor am I going to talk about how it  is a story of Israel’s redemption after leaving God  and chasing after other gods. For we know that God is a jealous God  and wants all of our worship.
What I am going to talk about today is personal and I may cry as I write this. I'm sharing this today because I believe God wants me to. So please bare with me as I tell my story. Let me pray first. Father, you know my heart and how I only want to say what you would have me to say. Please speak through me and to these ladies. May my story and what you have shown me in Hosea be a help,  comfort,  and hope to anyone here. Whether it's for the reader or someone they know is going through something similar. Thank you Father for trusting me with this trial and let others be blessed for it.  I ask this in Jesus, my Lord and Saviours name, Amen.
So I'm just going to jump right in. Feb. 21 of this year marked 25 years of marriage. My husband and I were not saved when we got married,  so we were both worldly. Then I got saved two years later. He didn't get saved until 6 months after 911. But he never really got grounded and never made Jesus Lord of his life. We have had a crazy,  hard, fun, painful marriage. Which I suspect all of us have. Anyway, my husband decided that he no longer wanted to go to church and stopped going about 7 years ago. It has been difficult and through the years he went deeper into the world. Oh,  it broke my heart as I watched my husband slowly slip away from God, me,  and our four children. Please understand that I’m  only telling you all this so you can understand how much this passage in Hosea means to me.
Without going into all the details, let me just say that on Jan 21st  of this year,  my world was turned upside down and my life will never be the same. I found my husband with another woman. I thought my life was over. He showed no remorse and to this day has shown no desire to reconcile. Before you think it, yes, I have had to come to terms to my fault in our marriage and have done all I can to repent,  ask forgiveness to my Lord and to my husband. Trust me when I say, I had no idea that this would ever happen to me.
So now that I have laid the ground work,  let me tell you the beauty from the ashes of my life. I can say with conviction that God's word is alive, it is real; not just in bible times,  but for today as well. I have been through so much these past 9 months and to be honest, I have been in deep despair.  I lost all hope,  and prayed many nights through the tears and the agony for God to take me home. Of course, He had other plans.
My biggest prayer has been for my husband to get right with God and then for our marriage to be restored. As the days, weeks, and months have passed by, my hope dwindled and I struggled with never being with my husband. It consumed me constantly. I would just think about him and cry. I didn't want to be around married couples or even see them. It would rip my heart right open. I prayed for help yet the pain would not stop.
Then someone told me that I really need to stop being so consumed with my husband, let God deal with him and his sin, and take care of my walk with God; even if that means being without my husband the rest of my life. Those were harsh words for me to hear,  yet it was what I needed to start my road to recovery.
It was the next morning that I prayed and asked God to help me to stop being consumed with my husband and allow him to do a work in him that only He can do. Btw, it's amazing God's timing,  and how he works things out. I then began to do my devotions with my bible reading chart that I had made myself, last year, for this year. Again, God's timing. It was that very morning that my chart had me reading the story of Hosea when God opened a verse that changed me and my view of my Father.
I have always been intrigued by the story of Hosea,  sometimes even crying out how sad or unfair God was to put Hosea through all that pain. But on that morning I didn't see any of that. I came to chapter 2 and verse 16, which says….. And it shall be that day, saith the Lord, that thou shalt call me Ishi; and no more Baali….. I was curious to what these two words meant so I looked them up.  Ishi means first man,  but then the next word that stood out for me was “husband.” My heart just started to pound and I began to cry. Then I looked up Baali and it meant “my lord.”
Right then God was showing me that I was to look at him not as just my lord,  but also, “my husband.”  He showed me that I, like Gomer, was chasing after love, acceptance, joy, and peace with the wrong men. I put my will for my marriage above my relationship with my God. God is Hosea in this story redeeming me back to him. Oh, did I just fall into my Father's arms right then and wept for the first time with joy.
I now place God as my heavenly husband, “Ishi,” and trust him to take care of me as a spouse should for all my needs. We know the verse Phil. 4:19 that says….. But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus…. He new my need was for a husband who would take care of me, and he has not let me down.
Again, I gave my testimony that it would or could help someone going through a trial who needs to see God in a real way. When we are on the mountain top we can say with confidence God is good and he takes care of us. It's when we are in the valley that God proves that to us.

How Is Your Prayer Life? / Mrs Rebekah Oprzedek

When I was a young teenager, I heard a preacher tell a story about how he took two friends to the top of a mountain.  While they made their way along the path where usually he saw a lot of deer, they didn’t see any. When they reached the top, he prayed that on the way down God would let them see some deer. Within a few minutes of praying, they saw two deer! By the time they reached the bottom, they had seen several more! I remember thinking, “What would it be like to have the kind of relationship with God that when I pray something like that, believe, and He gives it to me?”   Fast forward to a road trip my husband and I took a couple of months ago… I had been told that people have seen eagles before along that stretch of road. “Lord, I would love to see an eagle,” I prayed. Five minutes later I saw one flying up high! “Lord, I would love to see an eagle up close in a tree,” I prayed again. Not two minutes later, I saw one sitting in a tree close by the road! This is just one of the many examples of how God has answered prayers that to some might seem as small and inconsequential, but to me they were special. I think it was because they were just something I desired and didn’t need, but He gave me the desires of my heart. My husband is a Camp Director at Cedar River Baptist Camp.  My first two summers working at the camp were especially hard for me. Facing the task of tackling something new and learning all the ins and outs proved to be a bit stressful. After getting all of that figured out by the second year, other issues surfaced.  But by the time my third year came around, something changed. It was seriously the best summer ever! Everything ran smoothly, the staff got along and I didn’t have to deal with any issues. The campers all behaved, there were no pranks, and people were saved and made life changing decisions.  My stress level was pretty much nonexistent! The only thing I can attribute this to is my husband’s and my prayer time and walk with God. Back in February, we attended a prayer conference.  It was based on the verse in Matthew 26 in which Jesus asks Peter, “What, could ye not watch with me one hour?”  They gave everyone a devotional with helps on how to pray, and challenged us for two weeks to have an hour devotion time. I remember thinking, “Wow! That’s a long time. How am I going to be able to pray for that long?” But at the end of the conference we committed, and our prayer life has drastically changed. It wasn’t that I didn’t have devotions before or that God never answered my prayers with a “yes,” but I found my time was more structured. I began praising Him more for who and what He is, not just asking for things I needed. I found myself longing for that time with Him, and finding a greater peace from spending time with Him. I can’t tell you all the countless times that He has answered my prayers or has richly blessed us. It’s not that I am perfect, and there are days when I don’t get the full hour in, but my time with Him is more precious to me than before. In Psalm 37:4 it says, “Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” God wants to bless us and give us the desires of our hearts, but are we delighting and spending time with Him? Do we go to Him just to ask for what we need, or do we actually spend our time praising and thanking Him for who He is and all that He has done for us?
